They have appeared in sermons, books, paintings, movies, prophetic charts, and countless predictions concerning the end of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When wars break out, someone points to the red horse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When famine strikes, someone points to the black horse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When disease spreads, someone points to the pale horse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When political powers rise, someone begins searching for the rider upon the white horse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Consequently, millions of people have learned to approach Revelation chapter six with fear before they ever understand the spiritual language in which the vision was given.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But there is a problem with beginning there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John did not begin with the horses.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Before John ever saw a white horse, he saw a throne<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before he saw a rider carrying a bow, he saw the Lamb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before the seals began opening, John heard the declaration that the Lion of the tribe of Judah had prevailed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Four Horsemen do not suddenly appear in Scripture as independent powers released outside the government of God. They appear because the Lamb opens the seals of the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That changes everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If we begin with the horsemen instead of the Lamb, Revelation becomes a book of catastrophe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If we begin with the Lamb, Revelation becomes an unveiling of divine administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The question, therefore, is not merely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who are the Four Horsemen?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The greater question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is the Lamb revealing and accomplishing through the opening of these seals?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That question requires us to travel farther back than Revelation chapter six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We must go back through Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We must understand the language God has already established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Bible does not wait until its final book to invent an entirely new vocabulary. Revelation gathers together images, symbols, patterns, and spiritual principles that have already appeared throughout the Word of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The serpent of Revelation takes us back to Genesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Babylon takes us back through the prophets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The tree of life takes us back to Eden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb takes us through Passover, sacrifice, prophecy, the cross, and resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The throne takes us through the Psalms and the prophets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horses and riders also have a biblical history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, if we want to understand the horses of Revelation, we must first understand how God has already used the imagery of horses and riders throughout His Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is one of the great principles that will govern this study:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scripture interprets Scripture.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We will not begin with newspapers and attempt to force their headlines into Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We will not begin with modern warfare and work backward into John’s vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We will not begin with fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We will begin with the Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation is the unveiling of Jesus Christ, and every symbol within the book must ultimately be understood within that unveiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That includes the Four Horsemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation chapter five prepares us for everything that follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John sees a book in the right hand of Him who sits upon the throne. The book is written within and on the backside and sealed with seven seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then a mighty angel proclaims:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n John weeps because no man is found worthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But one of the elders tells him:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Weep not.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because the Lion of the tribe of Judah has prevailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then John looks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And what does he see?<\/p>\n\n\n\n A Lamb.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This is the great transition that must govern our interpretation of the seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb is worthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb takes the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb opens the seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, Revelation chapter six cannot be properly understood apart from Revelation chapter five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horsemen are not running loose outside the authority of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The seals are being opened by the One who prevailed through death, resurrection, sacrifice, and victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The cross is behind the opening of the seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The resurrection is behind the opening of the seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The throne is behind the opening of the seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The victory of Christ is behind the opening of the seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Four Horsemen must therefore be interpreted from the victory of the Lamb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The word Revelation<\/em> means an unveiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something hidden is being uncovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something sealed is being opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something previously unseen is being made visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That principle is especially important when we come to the seven-sealed book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A seal conceals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The opening of a seal reveals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, when the Lamb begins opening the seals, He is not merely releasing events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is unveiling realities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This is why the first question we should ask when a seal opens is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What disaster happens next?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We should ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is being revealed?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Four Horsemen belong to this process of unveiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The white horse reveals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The red horse reveals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The black horse reveals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The pale horse reveals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And together they form a progression that cannot be properly understood when each rider is isolated from the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They are part of one opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One divine purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And one victorious Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This book will therefore begin where biblical interpretation should begin: with Scripture itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We will follow the language of God from Genesis through the Law, the Prophets, the Psalms, the teachings of Jesus, and the apostolic writings until we arrive at John’s vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We will examine horses and riders throughout Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We will examine conquest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We will examine the sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We will examine balances and measurements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We will examine famine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We will examine death and hell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We will examine the meaning of the earth upon which these operations take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And above all, we will examine the Lamb who opens the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Only after laying that foundation will we approach the four riders individually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n First comes the white horse<\/strong>, going forth conquering and to conquer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then comes the red horse<\/strong>, with power to take peace from the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then comes the black horse<\/strong>, whose rider carries balances in his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally comes the pale horse<\/strong>, whose rider is named Death, with Hell following after him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But our study will not end with the fourth horse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because Revelation does not end there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The seals continue opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The trumpets sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Babylon falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Zion appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Kingdom is proclaimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The New Jerusalem descends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The river of life flows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The tree of life appears again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And the Lamb remains victorious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, the Four Horsemen cannot be interpreted as though Revelation ends in chapter six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They must be understood in light of where the entire revelation is going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This book is not written to produce another end-time timetable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is not written to identify modern politicians, nations, armies, diseases, or economic events as individual horsemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is not written to frighten believers concerning what might happen tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is written to ask a much deeper question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n To answer that question, we must see what John saw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We must hear what John heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And most importantly, we must stand where John stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John was not viewing these things merely from the turmoil of the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He had heard the voice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Come up hither.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n He was in the Spirit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw the throne<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw the Lamb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And from that realm he watched the seals begin to open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is where we must read Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not from fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not from speculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not from the latest headline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But from the throne<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because when the Four Horsemen are seen from the throne, the question changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We stop asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What terrible thing is about to happen?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n And we begin asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is the Lamb unveiling?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That is the journey before us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From Genesis to Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the language of Scripture to the opening of the seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the white horse to the pale horse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the horsemen to the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And through it all stands the central testimony of the Book of Revelation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John.\u201d<\/strong> The Book of Revelation does not introduce a strange new language at the end of the Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The word \u201csignified\u201d<\/strong> immediately gives us one of the great keys to understanding the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John was shown truth through signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Beasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Riders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Trumpets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Vials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A dragon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Revelation did not invent these symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God had already been speaking this language throughout Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By the time John saw four horses coming forth in Revelation chapter six, horses and riders had already appeared in the prophetic language of the Old Testament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By the time John saw the Lamb, the Lamb had already been revealed from Genesis through Exodus, Isaiah, the Gospels, and the cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By the time John saw Babylon, Babylon already had a long biblical history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By the time John saw the serpent, Scripture had already introduced the serpent in Genesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By the time John saw the tree of life, the tree of life had already appeared in Eden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, we cannot properly interpret Revelation by beginning with Revelation alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The language of Revelation was developed throughout the entire Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If we understand the language, we can understand the vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If we misunderstand the language, we will misunderstand what John saw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.\u201d<\/strong> The first verse of the Bible introduces us to heaven and earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The final chapters of Revelation bring us again to heaven and earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis and Revelation are connected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis introduces the tree of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation reveals the tree of life again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis introduces a river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation reveals the river of the water of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis introduces the serpent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation identifies the dragon as \u201cthat old serpent.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis introduces death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation reveals the destruction of death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis reveals a garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation reveals a city filled with the life of the garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis begins with God’s purpose in man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation brings that purpose into fullness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The ending of Scripture cannot be separated from its beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What begins as seed develops throughout the Word until it reaches maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is why we are going from Genesis to Revelation before attempting to interpret the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We need to learn God’s language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself.\u201d<\/strong> God established a tremendous principle in creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The seed is in itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n An acorn does not look like a mature oak tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But everything necessary to produce the oak is contained within the seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same principle operates throughout Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis contains tremendous truths in seed form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As Scripture unfolds, those seeds grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They develop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They mature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, Revelation shows many of them in fullness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis gives us the serpent in seed form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation gives us the old serpent fully exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis gives us Babylon in principle through human government and self-exaltation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophets develop Babylon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation unveils Babylon in fullness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis gives us the tree of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation reveals the tree of life in the midst of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis gives us dominion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation reveals kings and priests reigning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n One Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One unfolding revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.\u201d<\/strong> God has always used visible things to reveal invisible realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Creation itself speaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Light teaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Darkness teaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seed teaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Harvest teaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Water teaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fire teaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mountains teach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Trees teach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Animals teach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Horses teach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God takes something visible and uses it as a language through which spiritual truth can be understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is why prophetic Scripture is filled with imagery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Joseph saw sheaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pharaoh saw cattle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nebuchadnezzar saw an image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Daniel saw beasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Zechariah saw horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ezekiel saw wheels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jeremiah saw an almond rod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John saw all kinds of symbolic images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The image is not the revelation itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is crucial when we come to the Four Horsemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are not merely studying four animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are studying what God is communicating through the horses and their riders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBehold, a sower went forth to sow.\u201d<\/strong> Jesus constantly used natural pictures to reveal spiritual realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He spoke of a sower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wheat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sheep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Vines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Branches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Harvests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When Jesus spoke about seed, He was not giving an agricultural seminar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The seed represented something greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When He spoke about soil, He was revealing conditions within men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When He spoke about wheat and tares, He was revealing two different productions growing toward maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When He spoke about vines and branches, He was revealing union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The natural image carried spiritual truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Book of Revelation operates according to this same divine principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We cannot suddenly arrive at Revelation and abandon the language God has used throughout the rest of Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNow the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.\u201d<\/strong> Jesus interpreted His own symbol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He said plainly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The seed is the Word of God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This shows us how biblical symbolism works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seed is a natural thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But within the teaching of Jesus, seed becomes a spiritual language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Once Jesus establishes that language, we can recognize the principle elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is exactly what we must do with Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We must search Scripture and discover how God has already used its symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What does a horse represent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What does a rider represent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What does a crown represent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What does a bow represent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What does a sword represent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What do balances represent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What do wheat and barley represent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What do oil and wine represent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What does death represent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is hell?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is the earth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is heaven?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What does it mean for peace to be taken from the earth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n These questions cannot be answered merely by looking at current events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhich things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.\u201d<\/strong> Here is one of the governing principles of this entire book:<\/p>\n\n\n\n When we encounter a symbol in Revelation, we search Scripture for its spiritual language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We do not begin with newspapers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We do not begin with television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We do not begin with political theories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We do not begin with fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We begin with Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If John sees a sword, we search the Word for the meaning of the sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If John sees a horse, we search the Word for horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If John sees balances, we search the Word for balances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If John sees famine, we search the Word for famine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If John sees death, we follow death from Adam to Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This does not mean natural events have no place in God’s purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It means natural events cannot be allowed to define spiritual symbols contrary to the language God has already established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.\u201d<\/strong> Revelation was never intended to be understood merely through natural reasoning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The natural mind looks at everything from the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The spiritual mind sees from God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The natural mind sees a horse and immediately searches for an earthly army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The spiritual mind asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What has God said about horses?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The natural mind sees a sword and immediately sees physical warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The spiritual mind searches Scripture and discovers a sword proceeding from the mouth of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The natural mind sees famine and thinks only about the absence of natural food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the prophet Amos declared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNot a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n God uses natural language to reveal spiritual realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, spiritual discernment is absolutely necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet.\u201d<\/strong> This may be one of the most important statements in the entire Book of Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John tells us where he was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is pay dirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If we miss this, we can spend our entire lives trying to interpret a spiritual revelation from the natural realm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John did not say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n I was in Roman politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I was in world economics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I was in military strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I was in newspaper headlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Revelation was seen in the Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The throne was seen in the Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb was seen in the Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The seals were opened in the Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horses were seen in the Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, we must understand the revelation from the realm in which John received it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This does not mean Revelation has no manifestation in the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It means its meaning originates in the Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAfter this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.\u201d<\/strong> Before John sees the opening of the seals, he hears a voice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation chapter six must be interpreted from Revelation chapter four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John is called upward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He sees a throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He sees divine government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He sees heavenly order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then in Revelation chapter five he sees the Lamb take the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Only after the throne has been revealed and the Lamb has taken the book do the seals begin to open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, the Four Horsemen cannot be interpreted correctly from an earthly viewpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the earth, everything looks chaotic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the throne, there is administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the earth, we see crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the throne, we see purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the earth, we see uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the throne, we see the Lamb holding the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals.\u201d<\/strong> There it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who opened the seal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not the devil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not the beast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not some modern government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not some mysterious world ruler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before we identify the rider, we must identify the One opening the seal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before we interpret the horse, we must see the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before we talk about judgment, we must see the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before we talk about conquest, war, famine, death, or hell, we must establish that the entire opening begins with Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is the Revelation of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb is not standing helplessly while four uncontrollable powers destroy His creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb is opening the seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, whatever these horses reveal must ultimately be understood within the administration and victory of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWeep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.\u201d<\/strong> This statement destroys the foundation of fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The book is not opened from defeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is opened from victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The seals are not opened because Christ is losing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They are opened because Christ has prevailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everything that follows must be interpreted through that victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The white horse comes forth from victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The red horse comes forth under the authority of victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The black horse comes forth under the authority of victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The pale horse comes forth under the authority of victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The entire vision operates beneath the government of the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If our interpretation makes the horsemen greater than the Lamb, our interpretation is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If our interpretation makes Satan the central character of Revelation, our interpretation is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If our interpretation makes Revelation primarily about fear, our interpretation is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe Revelation of Jesus Christ.\u201d<\/strong> Revelation means unveiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something covered is uncovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something hidden is revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something sealed is opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This becomes especially powerful when we come to the seven seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A seal hides something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Opening the seal reveals what was hidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, when the Lamb opens the first four seals, we should not merely ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is being released?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We should also ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The white horse reveals something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The red horse reveals something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The black horse reveals something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The pale horse reveals something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The seals are openings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horsemen are part of an unveiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is not merely a timetable of disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals…\u201d<\/strong> We must resist the temptation to tear the Four Horsemen apart and interpret each one as an unrelated event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They come forth in sequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n First the white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then the red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then the black.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then the pale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is progression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same Lamb opens every seal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same throne stands behind every operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same book is being opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same divine purpose is unfolding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, the Four Horsemen must eventually be understood together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Each horse reveals a dimension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But together they reveal an administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cKnown unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.\u201d<\/strong> God did not invent His purpose halfway through history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He did not react to Adam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He did not create one plan in Genesis, another plan under Moses, another plan at Calvary, and finally another plan in Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God has one eternal purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scripture progressively unveils that purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What God settled in His counsel is revealed within time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What appears as seed in Genesis develops through the ages until it reaches fullness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, as we approach the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, we are going to follow God’s language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are going to compare spiritual things with spiritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are going to allow Scripture to interpret Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are going to refuse to begin with fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are going to refuse to begin with headlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are going to refuse to pull four horses out of Revelation chapter six and disconnect them from the rest of the Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are going to begin where God begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And we are going to follow the revelation until we arrive where John arrived:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because before we can understand the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, we must understand the language in which God revealed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And once that language begins to open, the horses will begin to speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI saw by night, and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees that were in the bottom; and behind him were there red horses, speckled, and white.\u201d<\/strong> The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse did not suddenly appear in Revelation chapter six without a biblical background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Long before John saw horses coming forth as the Lamb opened the seals, the prophets had already seen horses and riders in visions from God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is tremendously important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If we begin our interpretation of the Four Horsemen with modern history, we can make the horses mean almost anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But if we begin with Scripture, the language starts interpreting itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Zechariah saw horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw different colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw riders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw them operating under divine authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, when John later sees colored horses and riders in Revelation, a student of Scripture should immediately recognize familiar prophetic language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The language was already established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our responsibility is to follow it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.\u201d<\/strong> Throughout the ancient world, the horse was associated with power, warfare, conquest, speed, and movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A horse was not primarily a stationary image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A horse moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A horse carried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A horse advanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A horse brought its rider into action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This gives us an important foundation for understanding prophetic horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The rider directs that power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horse carries the rider’s administration into operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This distinction will become increasingly important as we approach Revelation chapter six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We must look at both:<\/p>\n\n\n\n the horse<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n and<\/p>\n\n\n\n the rider.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n What is the nature of the horse?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who or what is directing it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What authority has been given?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is being accomplished?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Where is the horse moving?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What follows its movement?<\/p>\n\n\n\n These are biblical questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh…\u201d<\/strong> A horse carries power, but a rider gives direction to that power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horse does not determine its own destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The rider governs its movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This becomes one of the simplest but most useful principles for understanding the Four Horsemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When John sees a rider upon a white horse, we must examine both the color and the rider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When he sees the red horse, we must examine what is given to the rider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When he sees the black horse, we must notice what the rider carries in his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When he sees the pale horse, John actually gives us the rider’s name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every detail matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nothing in the vision is accidental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him.\u201d<\/strong> This immediately keeps us from making the mistake of assuming that every image of a rider must represent something evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scripture uses the imagery of riding for God Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He rides upon the heavens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He rides upon the clouds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The language speaks of divine movement, majesty, government, and power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, a rider in prophetic language must be interpreted by its context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We cannot say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Horse equals evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rider equals evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Judgment equals Satan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That would violate Scripture before we ever reached Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The question is always:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBehold, the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt: and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence…\u201d<\/strong> Here again we see the prophetic language of divine movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lord rides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His presence comes into a realm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Idols are shaken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n False powers are exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something changes because God moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is one reason we must be careful with prophetic imagery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If we insist that every image must be interpreted with wooden literalism, we would have to begin looking for God physically sitting upon a cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Isaiah is communicating something greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God is moving in judgment and administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His presence confronts Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The idols cannot remain untouched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The language is symbolic, but the operation is real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It means a visible image is being used to communicate a spiritual reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is exactly the kind of language we encounter in Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd his horses are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves…\u201d<\/strong> The prophets repeatedly use horses in connection with movements of judgment, nations, armies, and divine administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horse communicates strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An operation advancing toward its appointed purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But we must never separate these movements from the sovereignty of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Even when nations are involved, Scripture sees beyond the natural instrument to the divine purpose operating through history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This will become essential in Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John does not see the horsemen while standing on the earth wondering who is in control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He has already seen the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He has already seen the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He has already heard that the Lamb has prevailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And the Lamb opens the seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains…\u201d<\/strong> Now we come to one of the most important Old Testament passages for understanding the Four Horsemen of Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Zechariah sees:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Already the number should catch our attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John will later see four horses coming forth under the first four seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Zechariah’s vision contains four groups of horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation contains four horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This does not mean every detail is identical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But it means John is using prophetic language that Scripture has already established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We must listen carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black horses;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n And in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot grisled and bay horses.\u201d<\/strong> Now the connection becomes impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Zechariah sees:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Red horses.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Black horses.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n White horses.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Grisled and bay horses.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n John sees:<\/p>\n\n\n\n A white horse.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A red horse.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A black horse.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A pale horse.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We should immediately understand that the colors in Revelation do not appear out of nowhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is prophetic history behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Holy Spirit has already used colored horses to communicate divine operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, before someone tells us the Four Horsemen are simply four modern catastrophes, we must ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fortunately, Zechariah asked the same question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThen I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me, What are these, my lord?\u201d<\/strong> That is the right question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Zechariah did not invent an interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This should be our attitude toward Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We should not approach the text determined to make it fit something we have already been taught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We should not begin with a chart and then force Scripture into the chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We should not begin with a newspaper and force the vision into the headline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We should ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lord, what are these?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n And then we should allow Scripture to answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Zechariah asked what the horses represented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The answer gives us a tremendous key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.\u201d<\/strong> Here is our biblical foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horses are associated with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n And where have they been?<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is throne language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is government language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is administration language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They do not originate in chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They proceed from the presence of divine government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now compare that with Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before the horses appear in Revelation chapter six, John sees the throne in chapter four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then he sees the Lamb in chapter five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then the Lamb opens the seals in chapter six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The order matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We cannot reverse the order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horses must be understood in relation to what stands behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And what stands behind them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThese are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.\u201d<\/strong> Notice the language:<\/p>\n\n\n\n That phrase becomes very important when we arrive at the first horse in Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The rider upon the white horse goes forth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHe went forth conquering, and to conquer.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This is movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something that has stood before divine government is now going forth into activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horse carries an operation from one realm into another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This gives us a much stronger biblical foundation than simply saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n White horse equals this historical person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Red horse equals this particular war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Black horse equals this famine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pale horse equals this disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those interpretations may produce interesting charts, but we are after something deeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the LORD hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth.\u201d<\/strong> Again, the horses are sent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They have purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They have direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They move through the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The language is administrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This raises another question we will have to address as our study develops:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes Scripture speaks of the literal physical earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But prophetic language can also use earth to describe a realm, an order, a people, or a state of being contrasted with heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John sees things operating in heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He sees things operating in earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He sees things operating in the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These realms form part of Revelation’s language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, when the red horse is given power to take peace from the earth<\/strong>, we must not assume the meaning before we examine the language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We will allow Scripture to tell us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them…\u201d<\/strong> Again we find horses and chariots associated with divine activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic picture is not one of a powerless God standing outside history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God governs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God administers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God judges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God reveals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God brings His purpose to completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation is filled with movement from the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Voices proceed from the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lightnings proceed from the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Trumpets sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seals open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Messengers move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Horses go forth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bowls are poured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Babylon falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Zion stands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The New Jerusalem descends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The river flows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everything is moving toward divine fullness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire…\u201d<\/strong> Here again horses appear in a supernatural context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These are horses of fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The image cannot be reduced to ordinary natural cavalry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It belongs to the language of spiritual reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fire throughout Scripture carries tremendous meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God appeared in fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Word is compared to fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Judgment is associated with fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Purification is associated with fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Holy Ghost appears with tongues like as of fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, the Bible continually combines natural imagery with spiritual meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same principle must govern our understanding of Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.\u201d<\/strong> This is powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horses were present before the servant could see them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His natural eyes saw an enemy army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Elisha saw another realm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The servant saw danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Elisha saw divine government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The servant saw what was happening on earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Elisha saw what surrounded the situation from the spiritual realm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then Elisha prayed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is precisely what Revelation means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An unveiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An opening of the eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A revealing of what cannot be understood merely through natural sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John was shown another realm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The natural man looks at Revelation and sees catastrophe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The spiritual man asks God to open his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSome trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.\u201d<\/strong> Scripture also warns us not to mistake the instrument for the source of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Men trust in horses because horses represent natural strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Military strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Human ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Visible power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But God’s people are called beyond dependence upon visible power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This gives us another dimension of the symbol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A horse can represent power in motion, but the nature and source of that power must always be discerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Whose horse?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Whose rider?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Whose authority?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Whose purpose?<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is why Revelation gives us details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Color matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The rider matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What the rider carries matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is given to the rider matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Where the horse goes matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What follows matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAn horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.\u201d<\/strong> Natural strength cannot accomplish God’s eternal purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horse possesses strength, but strength alone does not save.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is another reason the rider matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Power without divine direction cannot produce divine purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Four Horsemen are not merely pictures of raw power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They are pictures of power under administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And Revelation has already told us where the administration originates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True…\u201d<\/strong> This verse is enormously important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation itself gives us another white horse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And this time there is no question concerning the rider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is called:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The passage continues until the rider is identified with the Word of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, we cannot establish a rule that a horseman in Revelation must automatically represent an evil power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation itself will not allow it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The white horse of Revelation 19 is directly associated with Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That does not mean we should automatically assume every white horse in Scripture carries exactly the same meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But it does establish something important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n That becomes extremely important when we interpret the first seal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations…\u201d<\/strong> Here we see why learning God’s language matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A natural interpretation sees a sword and thinks immediately of a metal weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But where does this sword come from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ does not have a literal steel blade sticking out of His mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The imagery interprets itself through Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The sword proceeding from His mouth speaks of His Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His declaration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This same principle will become important when we reach the red horse and the great sword given to its rider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We cannot simply see the word sword<\/strong> and assume natural warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We must ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is how Revelation opens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One symbol at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One Scripture at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One revelation at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSurely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.\u201d<\/strong> The prophets have already given us the language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Zechariah gives us colored horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He gives us four groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He gives us horses going forth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He connects them with the spirits of heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He shows them standing before the Lord of all the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Psalms show God riding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Isaiah shows the Lord riding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kings shows horses and chariots of fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation shows Christ upon a white horse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The biblical witness is broad enough that we cannot reduce horse imagery to one simplistic definition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But a pattern clearly emerges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And the rider reveals the nature, direction, and purpose of the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThese are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.\u201d<\/strong> This is where we must finish our foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When we reach Revelation chapter six, we will encounter four horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But we must remember what Scripture has already shown us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They do not appear before John sees the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They do not appear before John sees the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They do not appear before the Lamb takes the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They do not appear until the Lamb opens the seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The order is divine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now we are getting somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horses are not the starting point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The throne is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horsemen are not the central characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horsemen are not four uncontrolled powers galloping through a universe abandoned by God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They appear within an ordered revelation whose center is the victorious Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That means we are finally ready to approach the book in the hand of Him who sits upon the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before the white horse can go forth, someone must open the first seal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before the seal can be opened, someone must be found worthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before anyone can be found worthy, the book must be revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And when John looked for the One worthy to open that book, he discovered the great truth upon which the entire Book of Revelation stands:<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the next chapter, we will stand with John before the throne and examine the Lamb and the Seven-Sealed Book<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because before we can understand what comes out of the book\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.\u201d<\/strong> Before John ever sees the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, he sees a throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That order cannot be ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation does not begin the opening of the seals with chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It begins with government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John is called:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Immediately he is in the Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And the first great reality brought before him is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The throne was not being constructed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The throne was not waiting to see what would happen on earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The throne was already set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God was already governing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Divine purpose was already established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before the white horse appears, the throne is set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before the red horse appears, the throne is set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before the black horse appears, the throne is set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before the pale horse appears, the throne is set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nothing about Revelation chapter six can overthrow Revelation chapter four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, whatever happens when the seals open must be interpreted from the reality of divine government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cCome up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.\u201d<\/strong> John had to be brought into another realm of understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the earth, circumstances appear confusing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wars rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kingdoms fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Systems shake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Death operates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Men struggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nations rage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But John is not told to remain on the earth and interpret everything according to outward appearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He hears:<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is the position from which Revelation must be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John sees from the Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John sees from heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John sees from the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When we interpret the Four Horsemen merely from the earth, we begin searching history for four disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When we interpret them from the throne, we begin asking what divine operation is being revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The viewpoint changes the interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne…\u201d<\/strong> The throne dominates John’s vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everything is positioned in relationship to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The elders are around the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The living creatures are around the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The lamps burn before the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Voices proceed from the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Worship surrounds the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb appears in the midst of the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This tells us something fundamental about Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It reveals government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The events of Revelation do not occur in a universe where God has lost control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They unfold beneath the government of the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is why fear-based interpretations miss the heart of the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They magnify the beast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They magnify Babylon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They magnify the dragon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They magnify death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They magnify catastrophe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But John magnifies the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And in the midst of the throne he sees the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.\u201d<\/strong> Now John sees the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Where is it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n That location tells us everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The book does not originate with the beast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The book is not in the dragon’s hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The book is not controlled by Babylon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The book is not lying somewhere waiting for history to determine its contents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The book is in the hand of the One sitting upon the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In Scripture, the right hand speaks of power, authority, strength, and administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, before one seal opens, God shows John that the entire matter is under divine authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Whatever the seals contain, they belong to His purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Whatever their opening reveals, it proceeds from His government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Whatever operations follow, they do not take God by surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cA book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.\u201d<\/strong> This is not an empty book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is already written.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The book is not being written as history unfolds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is written before John sees the seals opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The purpose is established before the manifestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This agrees with the testimony of Scripture concerning God’s eternal counsel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God does not make His purpose up as He goes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The opening of the seals does not create God’s purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It reveals it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The book already contains the counsel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The seals conceal what is written.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When the seals open, what has been hidden begins to appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An unveiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSealed with seven seals.\u201d<\/strong> The number seven runs throughout Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seven churches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seven spirits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seven candlesticks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seven stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seven seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seven trumpets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seven vials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seven repeatedly carries the thought of fullness, completeness, and divine order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, the seven-sealed book presents a complete purpose under divine seal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nothing is missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nothing needs to be added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The book does not need another chapter written by man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It needs to be opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And only one is worthy to open it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?\u201d<\/strong> Notice the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who is intelligent enough?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who understands prophecy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who has studied enough charts?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who has enough political influence?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who commands the largest army?<\/p>\n\n\n\n The question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The opening of God’s purpose requires more than information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It requires worthiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Someone must possess the authority to take what is in the hand of God and bring it into manifestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The whole creation is searched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who can open the book?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who can loose the seals?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who can administer what God has purposed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.\u201d<\/strong> No man could do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Human wisdom could not open it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Human government could not open it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Religion could not open it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Natural strength could not open it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Adam could not open it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Moses could not open it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n David could not open it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophets could not open it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The apostles could not open it by themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No created order possessed the authority necessary to bring God’s eternal purpose to completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is why Revelation cannot ultimately be centered upon man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The answer must be found in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.\u201d<\/strong> John wept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because the sealed book represented something that had to be opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The purpose had to be revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The mystery had to be unveiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What God had written had to come into manifestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But no man was worthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John’s tears represent the inability of humanity to bring God’s purpose into fullness through its own strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Religion cannot do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Law cannot do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Human effort cannot do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Political power cannot do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Military power cannot do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Intellectual power cannot do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The answer is not found in Adam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The answer is found in the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not…\u201d<\/strong> Two words change the entire atmosphere:<\/p>\n\n\n\n John sees impossibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The elder sees victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John sees a sealed book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The elder knows someone has prevailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John sees the inability of man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The elder points him to Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is the message of Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Weep because the devil has won.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Weep because the earth is doomed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Weep because four terrifying riders are about to destroy everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because someone has prevailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBehold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.\u201d<\/strong> Here is the foundation of everything that follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation begins from victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ is not attempting to prevail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He has prevailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is not trying to defeat sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He has prevailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is not trying to conquer death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He has prevailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is not waiting to discover whether God’s eternal purpose will succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, when the seals begin opening, they are being opened from a position of accomplished victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is absolutely essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If we interpret the seals as though the outcome is uncertain, we have ignored Revelation chapter five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If we interpret the Four Horsemen as powers capable of overthrowing the Lamb, we have reversed the vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before one horse moves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne… stood a Lamb as it had been slain…\u201d<\/strong> This is one of the most beautiful unveilings in the entire book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John hears:<\/p>\n\n\n\n John looks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n God is teaching us how His victory operates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lion conquers as the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Divine strength is revealed through sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victory comes through the cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Power is manifested through surrendered life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb is standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He had been slain, but He is standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Death did not hold Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The grave did not hold Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The cross was not His defeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was the manifestation of His victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, the One opening the seals is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n That must govern every interpretation that follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn the midst of the throne… stood a Lamb as it had been slain.\u201d<\/strong> Where is the Lamb?<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is not standing outside divine government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is not begging for authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is not struggling against another equal power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb occupies the center of government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is the Christ who opens the seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The cross and the throne are not enemies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb and divine government are not separate realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The One who gave Himself is the One who reigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The One who was slain is the One who administers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The One who shed His blood is the One opening the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHaving seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.\u201d<\/strong> In biblical imagery, a horn speaks of power and authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb has seven horns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Complete power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Full authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nothing is lacking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is not a weak Lamb trying to survive the operations of Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is the Lamb possessing complete authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When He opens a seal, He does so with authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When He sends an operation forth, it proceeds beneath His government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The horsemen are not stronger than the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Death is not stronger than the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hell is not stronger than the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Babylon is not stronger than the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The beast is not stronger than the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The dragon is not stronger than the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.\u201d<\/strong> The Lamb not only possesses complete power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He possesses complete vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nothing is hidden from Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nothing surprises Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nothing occurs beyond His understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Man sees fragments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb sees the whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Man sees today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb sees purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Man sees crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb sees completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is why we must learn to interpret Revelation from His viewpoint rather than ours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We see a red horse and panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He sees the entire book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We see famine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He sees the entire book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We see death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He sees the entire book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And He is the One opening the seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.\u201d<\/strong> This is the great transfer of administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The book is in the right hand of Him who sits upon the attempt to obtain victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They open because victory has already been accomplished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Calvary establishes the victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation unveils its administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The cross establishes the legal reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Spirit brings that reality into living manifestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The throne governs the process until everything is brought into alignment with what Christ accomplished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is why Revelation does not contradict the Finished Work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd hast made us unto our God kings
