These subjects have occupied prophecy teachers and Bible students for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yet the prophetic Word of God did not begin with the Book of Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It did not begin with Daniel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It did not begin with Isaiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It did not even begin with the prophets of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic purpose of God reaches back to the beginning and ultimately beyond the beginning, into the eternal purpose that God purposed in Himself before the ages unfolded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Bible is not merely a collection of disconnected predictions concerning events scattered throughout history. Scripture reveals one unfolding purpose centered in Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHaving made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Ephesians 1:9<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n That statement gives us an important key to Bible prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is a purpose<\/strong> behind prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God is not simply announcing events. He is revealing His will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is revealing His Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is revealing His Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is revealing the destination toward which His purpose has been moving throughout the ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before attempting to interpret prophetic events, we must understand something about the God who gave the prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God is not reacting to history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is not watching events unfold and then attempting to repair whatever goes wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Scriptures reveal a God of purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul spoke of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Ephesians 3:11<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Notice those words carefully:<\/p>\n\n\n\n ETERNAL PURPOSE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The purpose of God is greater than any single generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is greater than any earthly empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is greater than any political system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is greater than the rise and fall of nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God’s purpose is centered in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, biblical prophecy must ultimately be interpreted in relationship to Christ and the purpose of God in Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If our interpretation of prophecy causes us to lose sight of Jesus Christ, we have missed the center of the prophetic Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Book of Revelation gives one of the clearest statements concerning the nature of prophecy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Revelation 19:10<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n That verse changes the way we approach prophecy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cKnowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 2 Peter 1:20<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Bible prophecy is the revelation of the purpose of God through the inspired Word of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That definition immediately takes us beyond the common idea that prophecy exists merely to predict future events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prophecy certainly speaks concerning things to come. Scripture contains promises, warnings, judgments, visions, signs, and declarations concerning events that had not yet occurred when they were spoken. Yet prediction alone does not explain the prophetic Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prophecy reveals purpose<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God speaks prophetically because He is making known what He has determined in Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic Scriptures reveal where God’s purpose is going, what He is accomplishing through Christ, and how the many ages of His plan ultimately come together in Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul declared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAccording to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Ephesians 3:11<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n There is an eternal purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is a Christ in whom that purpose is centered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And there is a prophetic Word that progressively reveals that purpose throughout Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If we begin there, Bible prophecy becomes something much greater than an attempt to construct a calendar of future events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It becomes the revelation of God’s plan of the ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophet Isaiah recorded one of the strongest declarations concerning the prophetic authority of God:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDeclaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Isaiah 46:10<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n God declares the end from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This means that the beginning of Scripture contains within it the seeds of what will ultimately be manifested at the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis and Revelation are therefore not unrelated books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What begins in Genesis reaches its culmination in Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis introduces creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation reveals new creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis introduces the serpent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation shows the ancient serpent defeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis introduces death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation declares the ultimate removal of death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis introduces the tree of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation again shows the tree of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis introduces a garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation reveals the city of God and the river of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis introduces the conflict between two seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation reveals the ultimate triumph of God’s purpose in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The end was contained prophetically within the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is one reason prophecy cannot be interpreted merely by looking at current events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic language of Revelation has roots running throughout the entire Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before attempting to understand the last book, we must become familiar with the language God established in the books that came before it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic Word does not originate in the imagination of men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Peter wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 2 Peter 1:21<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Prophecy originated with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Men spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Men wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Men saw visions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Men dreamed dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But behind the prophetic message was the Spirit of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This gives prophecy divine authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It also means prophecy must be understood spiritually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The natural mind can study prophetic vocabulary, history, geography, dates, nations, and languages. Those things can have value. But spiritual truth requires spiritual discernment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 Corinthians 2:14<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The prophetic Word came by the Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, its spiritual meaning must ultimately be discerned by the Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This does not mean we abandon careful Bible study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It means careful Bible study must be joined with spiritual understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We compare Scripture with Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We follow biblical patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We examine context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We recognize symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We study how the inspired writers themselves use prophetic language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And through all of it, we depend upon the Spirit of God to illuminate the Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is one principle that should stand above nearly every other principle of prophetic interpretation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus Christ is the center of Bible prophecy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n John wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Revelation 19:10<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n This is enormously important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, when prophecy is interpreted in such a way that Jesus becomes secondary while beasts, wars, disasters, political leaders, and earthly kingdoms become primary, something has become unbalanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ is not a side subject in prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is its center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus demonstrated this after His resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Luke records:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Luke 24:27<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Imagine that Bible study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus began with Moses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then He moved through the prophets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And He showed His disciples the things concerning Himself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This tells us something profound about how Jesus understood Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Old Testament contained more than historical information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Within its history were prophetic patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Within its sacrifices were prophetic pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Within its feasts were prophetic truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Within its tabernacle were prophetic shadows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Within its priesthood were prophetic types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Within its kings were prophetic patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Within its prophets were prophetic promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And all of these things ultimately pointed toward Christ and God’s purpose in Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is a difference between prophecy and mere prediction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prediction asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is going to happen?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Prophecy asks something greater:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is God revealing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A person can become fascinated with predictions without ever understanding God’s purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They can spend years attempting to identify dates, nations, rulers, wars, economic systems, and world events while never seeing the spiritual message contained within the prophetic Scriptures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This has happened repeatedly throughout church history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every generation has been tempted to interpret its newspaper as though it were the final commentary on Bible prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wars occur, and someone immediately declares that the final war has arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A political leader rises, and someone attempts to identify him as a prophetic beast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Technology changes, and someone announces that a particular invention must be the mark of the beast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Economic systems change, and another prophetic theory emerges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then circumstances change again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The interpretation disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A new interpretation replaces it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the Word of God remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prophecy must therefore be rooted first in Scripture<\/strong>, not speculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Current events may be interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n History may illuminate certain prophetic circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Scripture must interpret Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God established a prophetic vocabulary throughout Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Consider some of the recurring images:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Woman.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Serpent.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Lamb.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Lion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Mountain.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Stone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Tree.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n River.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Sea.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Earth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Heaven.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n City.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Temple.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Babylon.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Jerusalem.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Bride.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Beast.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Horn.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Throne.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n These images do not suddenly appear without meaning in the Book of Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Many of them have histories reaching backward through Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When John sees Babylon, the reader should already know something about Babylon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When John sees a Lamb, the reader should already understand the biblical development of the lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When John sees a woman, Scripture has already used women prophetically and symbolically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When John sees a serpent, Genesis has already introduced that serpent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When John sees a throne, the prophets have already spoken concerning God’s throne and government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When John sees a mountain, Scripture has already established mountains as significant prophetic images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, one of the safest principles for interpreting prophecy is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Follow the symbol through Scripture.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Do not immediately ask what a modern prophecy teacher says the symbol means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n First ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n How has God already used this symbol in His Word?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That approach allows the Bible to develop its own prophetic vocabulary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophets did not merely see calamity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They saw glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Isaiah saw the government of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw a child born and a Son given.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw One upon whose shoulder the government would rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw the increase of His government and peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw a mountain established above the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw nations flowing unto it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw the earth filled with the knowledge of the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jeremiah saw a new covenant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ezekiel saw a river flowing from the house of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Daniel saw a Stone cut without hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw that Stone strike the image representing earthly kingdoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then he saw the Stone become a great mountain and fill the whole earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophets saw beyond judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They saw Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They saw restoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They saw righteousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They saw glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They saw Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is critical because prophecy is sometimes presented almost entirely as a message of catastrophe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But catastrophe is not the destination of God’s purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ is.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Kingdom is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victory is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic Word moves toward the triumph of God’s purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Daniel provides one of Scripture’s great prophetic Kingdom declarations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Daniel 2:44<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Earthly kingdoms rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Earthly kingdoms fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Babylon rises and falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Medo-Persia rises and falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Greece rises and falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rome rises and changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Human governments come and go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Daniel saw another Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This Kingdom was not created by human political power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It originated with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus came preaching that Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His message was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Mark 1:15<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Notice the connection between prophecy and fulfillment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The time is fulfilled.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n What the prophets had spoken was coming into manifestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Kingdom was not merely a theological subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was the fulfillment of prophetic expectation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is why Bible prophecy cannot properly be separated from the Kingdom of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophets repeatedly saw the coming government, reign, righteousness, peace, and dominion of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The cross changed everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Any interpretation of Bible prophecy that ignores the finished work of Christ will eventually become distorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At Calvary, Jesus did not merely begin a battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He accomplished something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He declared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt is finished.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 John 19:30<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote concerning Christ:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Colossians 2:15<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The prophetic interpreter must begin with the victory of Christ rather than the imagined victory of darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This does not mean Scripture contains no conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It does not mean there is no judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It does not mean there is no overcoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the outcome of God’s purpose is not uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ has already established the legal basis of victory through His death and resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What has been accomplished in Him must be manifested throughout God’s creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This gives Bible prophecy its proper direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are not waiting to discover whether Jesus wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He has overcome.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic Word reveals the unfolding manifestation of that victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not every prophecy appears in the form:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThus saith the Lord, this shall happen.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Some prophecy is contained in patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote concerning Israel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNow all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 Corinthians 10:11<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Historical events can carry prophetic significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Egypt becomes more than a geographical location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Exodus becomes more than the story of an ancient nation’s escape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Passover becomes more than a Jewish observance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The wilderness becomes more than a desert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Canaan becomes more than a piece of land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The tabernacle becomes more than a tent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The priesthood becomes more than a religious office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These historical realities become patterns through which God reveals greater spiritual realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote concerning Christ:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 Corinthians 5:7<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The Passover lamb pointed beyond itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The natural contained a prophetic witness concerning the spiritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This principle runs throughout Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God does not reveal everything in one verse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He plants a seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then He develops it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis may introduce a truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Psalms may expand it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophets may enlarge it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus may reveal its fulfillment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The apostles may explain its spiritual meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation may display it in symbolic fullness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is progressive revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Consider the promise of the Seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis introduces the seed of the woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The promise moves through Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It moves through Isaac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It moves through Jacob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It moves into Judah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It develops through David.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophets speak concerning the coming One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then Paul writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd to thy seed, which is Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Galatians 3:16<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The revelation becomes clearer as Scripture progresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This teaches us patience in prophetic interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We should not build entire doctrines upon isolated prophetic statements while ignoring how the rest of Scripture develops the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Follow the revelation until the Bible itself brings it to maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Much modern interest in prophecy has been driven by fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fear of the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fear of world government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fear of economic collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fear of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fear of technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fear of judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fear of the beast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fear of the Antichrist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fear can sell books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fear can attract attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fear can fill auditoriums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But fear is not the foundation of the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor God hath not given us the spirit of fear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 2 Timothy 1:7<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The prophetic Word should produce faith in the sovereignty and purpose of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When Daniel saw earthly kingdoms, he also saw God’s Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When John saw beasts, he also saw the Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When John saw Babylon, he also saw the holy city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When he saw conflict, he also saw overcomers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When he saw death, he also saw death destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic message continually points beyond the conflict toward God’s victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The writer of Hebrews speaks concerning believers who are spiritually mature:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Hebrews 5:14<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Prophetic Scripture requires discernment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Symbols must be discerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Patterns must be discerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Times and seasons must be discerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Natural and spiritual applications must be distinguished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The letter and the spirit must be distinguished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The shadow and the substance must be distinguished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is why prophetic understanding grows as believers mature in the Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A person may know many prophetic theories and still lack prophetic discernment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Information is not the same thing as revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The goal is not merely to accumulate prophetic facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The goal is to see what God is saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This principle will guide us throughout this book:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let Scripture interpret Scripture.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n When we encounter a prophetic symbol, we will search the Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When we encounter a prophetic promise, we will follow its development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When we encounter an Old Testament shadow, we will look for its New Testament substance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When we encounter Kingdom prophecy, we will examine what Jesus and the apostles taught concerning the Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When we encounter the language of Revelation, we will look backward through Scripture for the biblical roots of that language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This approach protects us from building prophecy upon imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Peter said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNo prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 2 Peter 1:20<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The prophetic Word belongs within the testimony of the whole Word of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As we begin studying Bible prophecy, our primary question will not be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What frightening thing happens next?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Nor will it be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Which modern nation is this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Nor:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Which politician fulfills this verse?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Our great question will be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is God revealing concerning His purpose in Christ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That question changes everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It takes us back to Genesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It carries us through Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It takes us into the tabernacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It brings us through Israel’s feasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It carries us into the Psalms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It walks with the prophets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It brings us to Bethlehem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It takes us to Calvary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It brings us out of the empty tomb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It carries us into Pentecost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It takes us through the Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And ultimately it brings us to the consummation of God’s purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bible prophecy is the testimony of a God who knows the end from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is the testimony of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is the revelation of the Kingdom of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is the unfolding of the eternal purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And once we understand that foundation, we are ready to return to the beginning of Scripture and examine one of the first great prophetic declarations ever given.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There we will encounter a woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A serpent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And a promise of victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is where our prophetic journey begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 3:15<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n To understand Bible prophecy, we must go back to the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Long before Isaiah saw the glory of the coming Kingdom, before Jeremiah spoke of the new covenant, before Ezekiel saw the river flowing from the house of God, before Daniel saw the Stone cut without hands, and before John received the Revelation of Jesus Christ, God established a prophetic pattern in Genesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A serpent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And a promised victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis 3:15 is one of the foundational prophetic declarations in all of Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God spoke to the serpent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 3:15<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Immediately we encounter something that will continue developing throughout the Word of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are two seeds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The seed of the serpent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The seed of the woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From Genesis forward, Scripture continually reveals the development and conflict of these two seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This conflict cannot be understood merely in terms of natural genealogy. It reveals two spiritual orders, two natures, two wisdoms, two kingdoms, and ultimately two corporate expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One originates in the earthly, carnal order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The other finds its fulfillment in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The entire prophetic drama of Scripture begins to unfold from this foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The setting of this prophecy is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Man had disobeyed God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The serpent had deceived the woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Adam had eaten of the forbidden tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sin had entered the human experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Death had begun its reign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The relationship between man and God had been affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yet God did not allow the serpent to have the final word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before Adam and Eve were driven from the garden, God spoke prophetically concerning victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The serpent would not reign forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Death would not reign forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sin would not reign forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The purpose of God would not be defeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God declared that the seed of the woman would bruise the serpent’s head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The very place where failure appeared became the place where God announced victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This reveals something about the nature of biblical prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prophecy does not merely tell us what darkness will do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prophecy declares what God will accomplish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the beginning, God established the destination of His purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The serpent would be defeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The serpent introduced in Genesis does not disappear from Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic thread continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By the time we reach the Book of Revelation, the identity of this serpent is made unmistakable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Revelation 12:9<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Notice the expression:<\/p>\n\n\n\n THAT OLD SERPENT.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n John reaches all the way back to Genesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The serpent appearing in the beginning is still part of the prophetic imagery at the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This demonstrates why Genesis is so important to understanding Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation does not invent an entirely new prophetic language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It gathers together prophetic images that have been developing throughout Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The serpent is one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The conflict introduced in Genesis reaches its prophetic maturity in Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Revelation also shows us something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The serpent does not win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis also introduces the woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI will put enmity between thee and the woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The woman becomes another significant prophetic image throughout Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Women can represent corporate bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul used marriage to speak concerning Christ and the church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Ephesians 5:23<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Later he declared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Ephesians 5:32<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The natural relationship becomes a picture of a greater spiritual relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This helps us understand why women appear repeatedly in prophetic Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jerusalem is pictured as a woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Babylon is pictured as a woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The church is pictured in bridal language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And Revelation 12 presents a woman clothed with the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Revelation 12:1<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Again, the prophetic imagery reaches backward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis introduced the woman and the serpent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation again presents a woman and the ancient serpent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Bible has come full circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophecy becomes even more specific:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd between thy seed and her seed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 3:15<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n There are two seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is one of the great prophetic patterns of Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Word of God repeatedly reveals two opposing lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cain and Abel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ishmael and Isaac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Esau and Jacob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The flesh and the Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The old man and the new man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The earthly and the heavenly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The first man and the Second Man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The natural and the spiritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These distinctions are not identical in every detail, but they repeatedly testify to a fundamental spiritual division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is that which originates from the earthly order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And there is that which originates from God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul expressed this principle clearly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 John 3:6<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The difference is not merely behavioral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It concerns source<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Where did it come from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What produced it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What nature does it carry?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What seed brought it forth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seed determines fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seed is one of the most powerful concepts in Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis establishes the principle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhose seed is in itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 1:11<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Everything reproduces according to its kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An apple seed produces apples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A wheat seed produces wheat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Natural creation demonstrates a spiritual principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seed carries identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seed carries nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seed carries the potential for multiplication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When Scripture begins speaking about spiritual seed, therefore, it is speaking about something capable of producing after its own nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus used this principle repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He spoke of the Word as seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He spoke of good seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He spoke of corrupted seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He spoke of sowing and harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The apostolic writings continue the same principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Peter wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBeing born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 Peter 1:23<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n There is corruptible seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is incorruptible seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is born depends upon the seed from which it came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The promise of Genesis 3:15 eventually narrows toward Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God had spoken concerning the woman’s seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As Scripture progresses, the prophetic line becomes increasingly clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The promise moves through Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 22:18<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The promise continues developing until Paul gives us the inspired interpretation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd to thy seed, which is Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Galatians 3:16<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Christ is the promised Seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic line ultimately leads to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The seed promised in Genesis finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is the One through whom the serpent’s authority is broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is the One through whom sin is dealt with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is the One through whom death is conquered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is the One through whom creation is reconciled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The first prophecy points toward Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul makes an important statement concerning the coming of Jesus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Galatians 4:4<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The language echoes the ancient promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Son was made of a woman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Seed had appeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Centuries of prophetic expectation had moved toward this moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Abraham had received promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Moses had established patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n David had received covenant promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Isaiah had spoken concerning the coming Son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Micah had identified Bethlehem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophets had testified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then, in the fullness of time, Christ came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Seed of the woman entered the human experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis declared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt shall bruise thy head.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 3:15<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The head speaks of authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The promise therefore concerns more than temporary resistance to evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It speaks of the breaking of the serpent’s dominion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus came to accomplish precisely that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 John 3:8<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Notice the language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n FOR THIS PURPOSE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The manifestation of Christ was connected with the destruction of the works of the devil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The writer of Hebrews goes even further:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Hebrews 2:14<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Christ entered death and defeated death from within.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The cross was not Satan’s victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was his defeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What appeared naturally to be the destruction of Jesus became the instrument through which the power of death was broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is the wisdom of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At Calvary, the prophecy spoken in Eden reached a decisive fulfillment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Colossians 2:15<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Jesus triumphed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This truth must govern our interpretation of everything that follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The serpent appears in Revelation, but he appears as a defeated enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The dragon appears powerful, but he is not equal with Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are not two equal powers struggling to determine who will finally win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God has no equal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ’s victory is not uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The cross settled the legal question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The resurrection declared the victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The ascension demonstrated the exaltation of the victorious Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Peter wrote concerning Jesus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWho is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 Peter 3:22<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n That is the present position of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Authorities and powers are subject to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bible prophecy must be interpreted from that position of victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic conflict of the two seeds eventually opens into another major biblical revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 Corinthians 15:45<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Then he continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 Corinthians 15:47<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Here are the two men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The first man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Second Man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Adam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The earthly man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The heavenly Man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every human being begins naturally in Adam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But God’s purpose is not to perfect Adam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God’s purpose is centered in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The old creation has its head in the first man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The new creation has its Head in the Second Man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is far larger than individual morality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It concerns two creations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two humanities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two corporate men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The revelation of the two seeds and the revelation of the two men belong together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The first Adam represents the earthly order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ represents the heavenly order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAs is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 Corinthians 15:48<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Then he declared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 Corinthians 15:49<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n There is God’s purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Man began bearing the image of the earthly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God intends a people to bear the image of the heavenly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prophecy therefore concerns more than events happening around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It concerns what God is producing within a people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic purpose moves toward a people conformed to the image of God’s Son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus is the Seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Scripture also reveals multiplication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A seed does not remain alone when it fulfills its purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cExcept a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 John 12:24<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Then He said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Christ was the Seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He went into death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He arose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And through His death and resurrection He began bringing forth a harvest after His own kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is why Paul speaks of Christ as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe firstborn among many brethren.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Romans 8:29<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The Firstborn implies others following.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Firstfruit implies a harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Seed produces multiplication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God is not merely revealing Christ to<\/strong> creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is forming Christ within<\/strong> a people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMy little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Galatians 4:19<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n That is the multiplication of the Seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This brings us into a dimension of prophecy often overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ has a Body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNow ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 Corinthians 12:27<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Jesus Christ is the Head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His people are His Body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Head and Body constitute a corporate expression of Christ in the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This does not diminish the uniqueness or Lordship of Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It magnifies His work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same Christ who conquered death is producing His nature within His people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead dwells within them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Romans 8:11<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The victory of the Seed is therefore being manifested in a people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is where prophecy begins moving toward the manifestation of the sons of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Romans 8:19<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Creation is waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But what is creation waiting for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not merely another sermon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not another religious institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not another denomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not another theological argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Creation is waiting for manifestation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something planted as Seed must come to maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something hidden must become visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something conceived by the Spirit must be brought forth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This prophetic principle begins in Genesis and continues through Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Manifestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God is bringing His purpose to fullness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now the imagery of Revelation 12 becomes even more significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John saw:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cA woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Revelation 12:1<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n She was travailing in birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cShe brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Revelation 12:5<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Here again are themes introduced in Genesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The serpent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The ancient serpent opposes what the woman is bringing forth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because what is being brought forth carries the government of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The man-child is caught up unto God and to His throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic conflict is therefore connected with government<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who rules?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Which nature governs?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Which kingdom prevails?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Which man possesses dominion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic answer is always the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If there is a Seed expressing Christ, Scripture also speaks concerning the opposing seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus confronted certain religious leaders and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYe are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 John 8:44<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n This was not a statement about natural genealogy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus was identifying spiritual nature and expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their actions revealed the source they were expressing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John develops the same principle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 John 3:10<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Again we encounter two expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The issue is not merely what people claim religiously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The issue is what nature is being manifested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This principle becomes essential when interpreting prophetic Babylon, beasts, false religious systems, and the conflict between flesh and Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The two-seed conflict becomes visible immediately in the next generation after Adam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cain and Abel both brought offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Both were religious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Both approached God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yet something very different was operating within them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John wrote concerning Cain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWho was of that wicked one, and slew his brother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 John 3:12<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Cain became an early manifestation of the serpent’s principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The first murder recorded in Scripture was religiously connected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cain killed his brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because Abel’s offering was accepted and Cain’s was not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Religion without the life of God can become an enemy of that which is born of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This pattern continues throughout Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ishmael persecutes Isaac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Esau opposes Jacob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Saul persecutes David.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Religious leaders oppose Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The flesh persecutes the Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The old order resists the new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The serpent opposes the Seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul himself uses the story of Ishmael and Isaac spiritually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Galatians 4:29<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n There it is again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Flesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two births.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The conflict is not ultimately about two natural brothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul sees a spiritual principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One is born after the flesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The other is born after the Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And the flesh persecutes the Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is the prophetic conflict in another form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is easy to read prophecy and search the world for enemies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the Word brings the conflict closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Galatians 5:17<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The conflict between the two orders operates within the believer’s experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Adam and Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Flesh and Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Old man and new man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Earthly and heavenly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic Word is therefore not merely telling us what will happen somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It exposes the spiritual conflict taking place within humanity and within our own experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God’s purpose is that Christ become the governing life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seed is not planted merely so that it can remain seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seed is planted for harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Kingdom operates according to this principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFirst the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Mark 4:28<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n There is progression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same principle applies spiritually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God is bringing a people from spiritual infancy toward maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul declared that the purpose of ministry was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTill we all come… unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Ephesians 4:13<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The destination is fullness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God is not satisfied merely to forgive people and leave them spiritually immature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Grace brings us into Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Spirit forms Christ within us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Word matures us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God’s purpose moves toward the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis also says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd thou shalt bruise his heel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 3:15<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The serpent would bruise the heel of the woman’s Seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There would be suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There would be conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There would be the cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the wounds inflicted upon Christ would not produce His final defeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What appeared to be defeat became victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus entered death and came out possessing the keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John records His declaration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Revelation 1:18<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The heel was bruised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the Head of the serpent was crushed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Death could not hold Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The grave could not contain Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Seed arose victorious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is an important distinction between an accomplished victory and a manifested victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ has accomplished the victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yet Scripture still speaks of the progressive manifestation of that victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 Corinthians 15:25<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 Corinthians 15:26<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Notice the language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ reigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Enemies are placed under His feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Death itself is destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophecy of Genesis therefore continues moving toward its ultimate manifestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The serpent’s head is bruised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The works of the devil are destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Enemies come beneath Christ’s feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, death itself is abolished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is prophetic victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul makes an extraordinary statement to the church:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Romans 16:20<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Genesis spoke of the Seed bruising the serpent’s head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Romans speaks of Satan being bruised beneath the feet of the saints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because the saints are the Body of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The victory of the Head is manifested through the Body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ does not share His glory with an independent people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He expresses His victory through a people who are joined to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The feet belong to the Body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Head has conquered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Body participates in the manifestation of His conquest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now we can see the tremendous sweep of this first prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis gives us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The woman.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The serpent.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The two seeds.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The conflict.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The promised victory.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Revelation gathers those same prophetic threads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The woman.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The dragon.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Seed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The man-child.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The conflict.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The throne.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Kingdom.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The victory.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This is not accidental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God declared the end from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic story planted in Genesis develops throughout Scripture until its meaning comes into fullness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The first prophecy in Scripture does not end with the serpent victorious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It ends with his head bruised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That should establish our expectation for everything that follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bible prophecy is not the story of darkness progressively defeating God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is the revelation of God’s purpose progressively overcoming darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is not the story of Satan successfully destroying creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is the story of Christ redeeming creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is not the story of death winning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is the story of death being destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul declared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDeath is swallowed up in victory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 1 Corinthians 15:54<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The first prophecy pointed toward that victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Seed would come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The serpent would be defeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ would triumph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A new creation would emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A people would bear the image of the heavenly Man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And God’s purpose would continue moving toward its appointed fullness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the prophetic promise did not remain only in Eden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God began carrying that promise through generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Seed would move through a man named Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then Isaac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then Jacob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then Judah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The promise would become increasingly specific until the prophetic line ultimately brought forth Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is where we turn next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 22:18<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The prophetic promise announced in Eden did not disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It began to move through history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God had spoken of the Seed of the woman. As the biblical record continued, that promise became more specific. The prophetic line began narrowing through particular men, particular families, and particular covenant promises until the identity of the promised Seed became increasingly clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The story moves through Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then Isaac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then Jacob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then Judah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And eventually the prophetic line reaches Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is one of the great patterns of Bible prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God announces something in seed form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then He develops it progressively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The revelation grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The promise becomes clearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic line narrows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And finally Christ is revealed as the fulfillment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The story takes a major turn when God calls Abram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGet thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father\u2019s house, unto a land that I will shew thee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 12:1<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Then God gave him a promise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 12:2<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n But the promise was larger than Abraham personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 12:3<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n This is prophetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The blessing begins with one man, but its destination is all families of the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The purpose is universal in scope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God was not merely establishing an isolated national promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He was carrying forward the promise of the Seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The blessing of Abraham would ultimately reach the nations through Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The promise becomes even more specific in Genesis 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 22:18<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The word seed<\/strong> immediately connects this promise with the prophetic pattern already established in Genesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Seed of the woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now the seed of Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic line is becoming clearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul later gives us the inspired interpretation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNow to Abraham and his seed were the promises made.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Galatians 3:16<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Then he explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd to thy seed, which is Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Paul leaves no doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The promise given to Abraham was ultimately centered in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic Seed was moving through Abraham toward Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is important to notice what God said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He did not say only that Abraham would become a great nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Then later:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The purpose of God was always larger than one natural people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The natural nation had a prophetic role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The covenant line had a purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the destination was blessing reaching the nations through the promised Seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Galatians 3:8<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Notice that language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Gospel was preached beforehand to Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The promise was prophetic Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What was the message?<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn thee shall all nations be blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n That is the direction of the purpose of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Blessing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fulfillment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus made an extraordinary statement concerning Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYour father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 John 8:56<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Abraham saw beyond himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw something prophetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw the day of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The details of what Abraham understood may not have been identical to the revelation later given through the apostles, but Jesus Himself confirms that Abraham\u2019s experience contained prophetic sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The patriarch was not merely wandering toward a piece of land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He was participating in a prophetic purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The writer of Hebrews says Abraham looked for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cA city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Hebrews 11:10<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n This moves the promise beyond geography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Abraham was looking for something God Himself would build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic promise was earthly in expression, but heavenly in origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic line did not pass through every son of Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It passed through Isaac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn Isaac shall thy seed be called.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 21:12<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n This becomes important because Abraham had another son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ishmael existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the covenant promise moved through Isaac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul explains the spiritual significance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Romans 9:8<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Again we encounter the distinction between flesh and promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Natural birth alone did not determine the prophetic line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God\u2019s promise did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Isaac therefore becomes a prophetic type of promise-born life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He exists because God spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His birth was impossible naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Abraham was old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sarah was beyond the normal age of childbirth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But God fulfilled what He had promised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Isaac reveals a recurring principle in Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The flesh cannot produce the purpose of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Only God can bring forth what He has promised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Abraham and Sarah attempted to obtain the promise through natural means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ishmael was the result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But God did not abandon His word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Isaac still came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is a major spiritual truth here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What God purposes must come forth by the power of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Kingdom cannot be produced by flesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sonship cannot be produced by flesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Spiritual maturity cannot be produced by flesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic purpose cannot be fulfilled by human effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God fulfills His own Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the most powerful prophetic pictures in the life of Isaac occurs when Abraham takes him to Mount Moriah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God had said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTake now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 22:2<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Isaac carries the wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He goes with his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is laid upon the altar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then God provides a ram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The natural event becomes a prophetic picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A beloved son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Substitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Provision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The pattern points forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Centuries later, the Father would give His Son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus would carry the cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lamb of God would provide the sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Isaac was not the final sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He was a shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ is the substance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic line then moves through Jacob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Again, there are two sons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Esau and Jacob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before they were born, God spoke concerning them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul later quotes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe elder shall serve the younger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Romans 9:12<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The natural order is reversed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The firstborn does not automatically inherit the prophetic purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God\u2019s choice governs the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jacob receives the covenantal promise connected with Abraham and Isaac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God said to Jacob:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 28:14<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Once again the same prophetic language appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Blessing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The promise continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jacob\u2019s life contains another major prophetic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His name is changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He becomes Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is more than a personal detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The man becomes the father of the tribes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A household becomes a people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A people becomes a nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic promise expands through corporate development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What began with one man becomes many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This pattern will continue throughout Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One seed produces multiplication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One promise produces a people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One man becomes a nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ultimately one Christ becomes the Head of a many-membered Body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jacob had twelve sons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From these sons came the tribes of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Each tribe had a role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Each carried history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Each participated in the developing covenant story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But one tribe receives a special prophetic word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Judah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before Jacob dies, he gathers his sons and speaks over them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When he comes to Judah, the prophetic language becomes particularly significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jacob says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Genesis 49:10<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Now the prophetic line includes government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A sceptre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kingship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Seed is no longer only a promised descendant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is connected with royal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Judah becomes the royal tribe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n David comes from Judah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The kings of Judah come from that line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ultimately Jesus comes from Judah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Book of Revelation identifies Him as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe Lion of the tribe of Juda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014 Revelation 5:5<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The prophetic line has developed again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis 3 gave us the Seed of the woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Abraham received the promise that his Seed would bless the nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Isaac carried the covenant line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jacob carried the promise forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Judah received the sceptre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophetic picture is becoming increasingly precise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Blessing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Covenant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Genesis 49:10 continues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cUntil Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n This is deeply prophetic language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The sceptre remains connected with Judah until Shiloh comes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then the people gather unto Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophecy points toward One who carries royal authority and draws people to Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Whatever interpretive questions surround the word Shiloh<\/em>, the larger
